About The DSDC
Overview
The Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization. We are a nationally affiliated Main Street Community, and are associated with the North Carolina Main Street Center.
The Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation (DSDC) is an economic development initiative established in 1984 with a mission to foster a vibrant and economically thriving downtown Smithfield. The DSDC actively promotes downtown as an inclusive and engaging destination to live, work, and shop. Through targeted programs, the organization supports existing businesses, encourages new ventures, enhances the design and functionality of downtown spaces, and invites locals and visitors alike to experience the charm of downtown Smithfield. Additionally, the DSDC provides grants and collaborates with community organizations to secure funding and resources, driving growth and ensuring a dynamic downtown for all.
The organization is partially funded through a Municipal Service District (MSD), encompassing 18 blocks in Downtown Smithfield. Additional funding is provided by the Town of Smithfield, as well as grant-making organizations, sponsors, and private donors. Community support of fundraising efforts plays a vital role, enabling the DSDC to expand its support and services, furthering its mission to create a vibrant and economically thriving downtown.

Vision Statement
Nestled between the serenity of the Neuse River and the vitality of Interstate 95, Downtown Smithfield is the center of government, enhanced by thriving, independently-owned businesses. A destination for the arts, history, shopping, dining, entertainment, and recreation, Downtown Smithfield is the cultural center of the community.
Board of Directors
The Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation (DSDC) is governed by a dedicated Board of Directors, comprised of representatives from the downtown community, including property and business owners, as well as members of the broader community. In selecting board members, the organization prioritizes diverse perspectives and expertise to effectively support its mission. The board also includes two ex-officio members: the Mayor of the Town of Smithfield and the Chairman of the Johnston County Board of Commissioners, or their designated appointees.

The office of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation is located in the historic Hastings House at 200 South Front Street beside the Town Commons Park and the Neuse River.

Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation in charged with administering the program at the local level and building public-private partnerships to spur economic development that archives measurable results as investment, business growth, and job creation.

As a Main Street America TM Affiliate, Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation is part of a national network of more than 1,200 neighborhoods and communities who share both a commitment to creating high quality places and to building stronger communities through preservation-based economic development.
